Board of Directors

Diana Bourne

Diana lives in Delta Township and has been involved with Eaton Community Palliative Care since 1985. She helps with the Annual Auction and other fundraisers. She has also served our board in the past as Secretary. Diana received her Bachelor Degree in Social Work from MSU and has been the Director of Social Services at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility since 1988. She is also very active in the First United Methodist Church and the Eaton Rapids Women’s Club.

Anne Cantine - President

Anne lives in Eaton Rapids and has been on the Eaton Community Palliative Care Board since 1985. She has served on the Executive Committee since 1987. She volunteers to do fundraising, office work and created the original Palliative Care Thrift Store in 2004. Anne also has served as the Volunteer Patient Care Coordinator and never hesitates to do on-call work when needed. She is retired from the Eaton Rapids School system and has been an active volunteer for the Congregational Church and Senior Center. 

Dawn Christenson - Treasurer

Dawn is a 1979 graduate of Michigan State University’s Veterinary Technology Program. She worked 4 years at Town & Country Animal Hospital in Charlotte and is now a Specialist/Instructor at MSU with the Veterinary Technology program. Dawn is the recipient of many awards from the MSU Veterinary Technology Program including an Honorary Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology, two Director’s Awards, Michigan Veterinary Technician of the Year Award, Distinguished Service Award, and Teaching Award. She is listed in “Who’s Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine”, Crown Biographic Reference Publications. Dawn has had several publications in textbooks, professional journals and medical illustrations. Dawn also loves to volunteer at the Palliative Care Residence, assists with grant writing, fundraising and working on special projects.

Ed Dobbs

Ed is a long time Charlotte resident and Cum Laude honors graduate from Northern Michigan University. His daily emphasis is in fundamentals of teamwork and leadership expectations of excellence through the actions of preparation, passion and perseverance. Ed serves as Spartan Chassis’ Vice President of Sales and Customer Service where his team skills have helped them with their tremendous growth. He also serves on the Charlotte Public Schools Education Foundation. Prior to Spartan he had been Associate Superintendent of Charlotte Public Schools and past president of the Eaton County United Way. Ed’s diverse and successful business career along with his personal experience with his wife being a patient of the Palliative Care brings a unique perspective to the board. Ed’s deep appreciation for the loving care his wife received while in our Palliative Care motivates his strong desire to now serve on the board. He is a proud father of two daughters and grandfather of one very busy granddaughter.

State Senator Rick Jones - Executive Committee at Large

Rick is a State Senator for Michigan. He is married to Charlene and has two children. Rick holds a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and has had training in Executive Management, Law Enforcement, Crisis Management and Correctional Management. He spent over 30 years in law enforcement including that of Sheriff of Eaton County. He has been an active Eaton Community Palliative Care volunteer since April 1997. He does direct patient care, fund raising and has been a strong advocate for Eaton Community Palliative Care. 

Cindy Martens - Executive Committee at Large

Cindy lives in Charlotte and has been on the Eaton Community Palliative Care Board since 1995. Since becoming an Eaton Community Palliative Care volunteer in 1992, she has been actively involved in direct patient care as well as helping in the office, fund raising and preparing meals weekly at the Palliative Care Residence. She is a retired Real Estate Agent. Cindy is an active member of the First Lutheran Church and has been a dedicated community volunteer for many years. 

Dorothy E. Maxwell

Dorothy is a resident of Lansing and a graduate of Western Michigan University School of Public Affairs and Administration. She holds a Government Leadership Certificate from Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University. Dorothy is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Max Weingar Group. She was the recipient of the 2006 Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. Board Vice Chair for Sparrow Specialty Hospital; Trustee of the Capital Region Community Foundation and the Kim Jones Foundation; a Director on the Board of the Capital Area United Way, as well as the the Metropolitan YMCA, the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with a member of the Local Governing Body of ATHENA Powerlink and the Lansing Area League of Women. She has also served as a Delta Township Trustee and Planning Commissioner.

Fredrick K. McPhail

Fred is a resident of Grand Ledge, graduating in June 1987 from Michigan State University with a BA in Criminal Justice and the Mid-Michigan Police Academy in November 1987. He is a member of the Grand Ledge Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church of Grand Ledge. In 1987 Fred became a police officer for the Charlotte Police Department, investigating crimes, traffic accidents and various calls for service. He then accepted a position with the Eaton County Sheriff’s office in 1989 as a Deputy Sheriff, later becoming an Investigator, Detective, Sergeant, on to Captain, and in 2005 to the present, is the Undersheriff for Eaton County.

Rob Piercefield

Rob is a resident and Village President of Mulliken. He owns Swedes Restaurant, which has been family owned for 31 years. He is in charge of the “Community Dinners” in Grand Ledge, Sunfield and Mulliken, donating both his time and cooking skills. He is past chair of the Capital Area Substance Abuse and has been on the Eaton County Substance Abuse Board as well as the Eatran Board. Rob provides food for the Palliative Care Picnic and Christmas Party, as well as frequently dropping off meals for the Palliative Care Residence.

Dave Powers - Executive Committee at Large

ave is a lifetime resident of Charlotte. He owns Charlotte Realty and was the former Michigan Regional Manager for Badger Mutual Insurance Company. He is very active in issues concerning Charlotte, including Friends of Maple Hill Cemetery. He currently serves on the City of Charlotte Planning Commission. Dave was very instrumental in acquiring the property for our Palliative Care Residence including arranging for our attorney to work pro-bono as well as working on fundraisers and special projects.

Dr. Stanley R. Robinson

Dr. Robinson was born in Ionia County and raised in Grand Ledge. He attended MSU and graduated from Universtiy of Michigan Medical School. Before retiring, he was a physician in Grand Ledge for over 48 years and also taught medical students and residents for 20 years until 1998. He holds an honorary professorship from the Department of Family Practice at Michigan State University. He is also a current member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 2010 he won the prestigious Plessner Award, presented to a physician who “best exemplifies the practice & ethics of a rural country practitioner”. Dr. Robinson is a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Lansing and has studied and performed medical mission work in South Africa, Honduras and Tanzania. His hobbies include world travel, fishing, hunting, toy trains and caring for the less fortunate.

Jerry D. Roe

Jerry lives in Delta Township and is known as a great local historian. He has been a member of the Michigan Historical Commission since 1987, serving 2 terms as president. Jerry is former executive director of the Michigan Republicans and a member of Michigan Sesquicentennial Commission. He is past President of Friends of Turner Dodge Museum in Lansing, founder of Montanan’s in Michigan and was named “Michigander of the Year” by the Detroit News. Jerry is a professor of Government at Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. 

Judy Schultheiss - Secretary

Judy has resided in Charlotte for the past 46 years with her husband Ronald. She has been involved with Palliative Care since 2006 when her brother became a patient. Her duties have included, patient care, office, auction, frontier days, kitchen duties, selling flowers and just about anything that needs to be done. Ron & Judy have raised 3 daughters in Charlotte and have been involved with Charlotte Public Schools since 1963. The have nine grandchildren. Judy is a member of the Charlotte Christian Reformed Church and has been a Sunday School Teacher, Children’s Choir Director, Calvinette leader and Youth Group leader. She was also a Campfire leader. Since retiring from driving bus for Charlotte Public Schools after 31 years she states she has found her new passion serving at Eaton Community Palliative Care.

Attorney David Smith - Vice President

Dave graduated from Alma College in 1961 and from Detroit College of Law with honors in 1965. He passed the Michigan bar exam in 1965 and has been a practicing attorney since 1966. Dave was elected Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney in 1972 and has been in his private practice since 1976. Dave is involved in our community through the Charlotte Rotary Club, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Eaton County Bar Association, Courthouse Square Association, Planned Gifts Committee of Hayes Green Beach Hospital and has provided pro bono legal services for Eaton Community Palliative Care over the past several years. Dave and his wife Linda reside at Duck Lake and both offer their time to fundraising activities with Eaton Community Palliative Care.

Mollie Stevens

Mollie has been a volunteer since March of 1996. She resides in Bellevue, is married to Douglas and has 2 daughters. Mollie owned and operated a beauty shop for 13 years. She has been a 4-H leader and president; she participated in the American Cancer Society Fund drive and was Eaton County Extension President. Mollie is a Competency Evaluated Nursing Assistant (CENA) and is owner/operator of “Mollie’s Caregiver Services”, private pay home care service utilizing her hospice background. Mollie also holds an Associates Degree in business communications. 

Kay Wyszynski

Kay moved to Grand Ledge in 1989, with her son James and husband Ed, who passed away in April 2008 at the Palliative Care Residence after a long battle with MS. She holds an Associate of Arts degree from Northwestern Michigan College and a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University. She worked for her family's sail-making business for 20 years then served 18 years as Director of Finance for a Lansing based non-profit trade association. She has served on the Grand Ledge Board of Education, Grand Ledge Emergency Assistance Program, Eaton County Social Services Board as well as a trustee of the Eaton County Medical Care Facility. A 29 year member of the American Business Women's Association, Kay was honored as Woman of the Year in 1998 and 2009. Kay has served on many committees for St. Michael Parish and School. She was PTO President, Education Commission Chair, Annual Raffle Chair and was instrumental in organizing the church/school day care program. She also serves as a board member on the Greater Lansing Catholic Education Foundation and the Eaton County Republican Committee. Her hobbies include reading (mostly mystery), sailing and socializing.
